The deer got into this plant in August, and it took a few months to come back. These are tiny Chrysanthemum flowers that are still hanging on. The buds have finally started to turn into flowers after the deer came by for a couple of nights last summer and said "Oh look, some delicious salad for our nightly dinner, thank you humans!". We did not say thank you back. There was hardly a leaf left, let alone any flowers. So we took it out back in the fenced-in area and the plant has slowly been struggling back to life. The heat of the summer just left it a stick for a few weeks, but it has finally returned from its brush with death. The flowers here in the picture are not much biggger than a quarter (that would be 25 millimeters for you imperially-challenged Europeans, a fraction of a millimeter smaller than one of your Euros). Of course, with the recent frosts, this plant's days may be numbered. We cover up all the plants when the frost warnings go up, and yesterday and today we had some balmy weather during the day, but the temperature drops at night, so if we are not on top of the weather forecast, these little darlins' are history. We see the rest of the country is not having such an easy time with the weather this week, but usually it gets warm here for a short spell, then we sooner or later get a blast of Arctic cold that makes everything chilly again. |
